SAF 2017 Guest: Heather Nichols

 

Now for some exclusive ideas from none other than Heather Nichols.

"Hi everyone! This is Heather Nichols and I am so happy to be joining you today for Papertrey Ink’s Stamp-a-Faire event. I have a project to share that uses the traditional 7th anniversary gift of wool. The project features a layered wool felt technique that adds a great detail to wool embellishments. You will love how easy it is to do and how it leaves people wondering how you did it!"

1. Die cut leaves from wool felt, making sure you have two leaves in contrasting colors for each leaf embellishment.
2. Layer the leaves on top of each other and use a sewing machine to sew the vein details on the leaves using a very small stitch length. Trim off all excess thread ends.
3. Hold the stitched leaf with the color you want as the vein detail facing up. Use sharp scissors and slip them between the felt layers to cut away the top layer of felt in between the stitching lines.
4. On the right side of a circle die cut from white cardstock, stamp the berry image in Cocoa Bean, Canyon Clay, and Terracotta Tile inks. Stamp the sentiment to the left of the berry branch in Cocoa Bean ink.
5. Attach the leaves onto the circle piece so that they are attached to the stamped berry image.
6. Attach the circle piece to a card base die cut from kraft cardstock using the Noted: Scalloped Square die.
7. Adhere clear confetti around the circle piece on the card front.

• DIES: Happiness in Bloom Leaves (or other simple leaf die), Noted: Scalloped Square
• OTHER: Orange Zest felt, Summer Sunrise felt, Canyon Clay felt (or other preferred colors of felt), orange thread (or other matching color), sewing machine, small sharp scissors, clear confetti

This technique could be applied to so many things other than cards!  It is perfect for fall and definitely exudes that warm and cozy feeling. SAF 2017 Guest: Yana Smakula

Next up is designer extraordinaire Yana Smakula. 

"Hello, friends! This is Yana Smakula and I am so excited to participate in Papertrey Ink annual online stamping event - Stamp A Faire! In my video tutorial I'll show you how to turn simple paper die cuts into beautiful iron-looking embellishments for your project."

To create the faux iron embellishment: 

1. Die cut desired shape you’d like to turn into faux iron embellishment. 
2. Attach shape onto a piece of cardstock you can easily pick up without having to touch the shape itself
3. Ink up entire surface of the die cut with embossing ink (press the die cut onto the ink pad with a clear block to even coverage)
4. Cover die cut with embossing powder and heat set
5. Repeat 2-3 times to build up embossing powder layers
6. Remove die cut from the cardstock holder, if needed zap with a heat tool again to smooth out the edges. 

To create the card:

1. Cut thin paper to 4 ¼ x 5 ½ “. Cover with double sided sticky tape. 
2. Adhere colored cardstock pieces creating a bold geometric background. 
3. Arrange heart outline dies on the background, tape in place with washi tape (making sue to connect both dies - keep them connected) and run through die cutting machine to cut. Set aside. 
4. Die-cut identical shape out of white cardstock. Follow instructions to create faux iron embellishment. 
5. Adhere large negative background piece onto A2 card base. 
6. Inlay iron heart.
7. Finish the background by adhering small negative piece. 
8. Heat emboss “Happiest Anniversary Wishes” in silver embossing powder. Foam mount onto the card across the heart.
9. Embellish card by adding Nuvo Drops or stamping images from the Gathered Garden stamp set in Watermark ink or both.

• OTHER: Silver Filigree Detail Embossing Powder, Heat Tool, Scrapbook Adhesives Adhesive Sheets, Nuvo Drops in Gloss White & Liquid Mercury, Foam Adhesive, Platinum Die Cutting Machine

How did you like the way Yana did the color blocking here?  A great way to use up scraps, right? The elegant look she achieved with the inlaid die-cut that's coated with heat embossing is just awesome. I can image it in all kinds of different metallic hues, and lots of different die-cut shapes. SAF 2017 Guest: Betsy Veldman

We are pleased to introduce an exclusive presentation from Betsy Veldman.

"Iron probably isn’t the first material you reach for in your card making…you might go broke paying for postage on those cards if you ever want to actually mail one!  But how about some faux iron?  In this tutorial, I will show you how to transform some basic white cardstock diecuts into something resembling intricate and time-worn iron embellishments!  If you look through your stamp and die stash, you’re sure to find something that will work perfectly for this technique!"

Best Dad Card

1. Die cut scroll frame from white cardstock and transform with faux iron technique as shown in the video.
2. Set four small brads into frame as shown.  Adhere frame to an A2 vertical card base made from Smokey Shadow cardstock.
3. Die cut shield emblem from black cardstock using the Grand Finale dies.  Stamp with coordinating image using Versamark ink, then heat emboss with copper embossing powder.  Adhere, using foam tape for dimension if desired.
4. Wrap twine around card front twice and knot. 

Floral Thank You Card

1. Die cut scroll frame and larger label from white cardstock and transform with faux iron technique as shown in the video.
2. Die cut center oval of scroll frame from watercolor paper and stamp with mixed flowers from the Brushed Blooms set.
3. Create a horizontal A2 card base from Rustic White cardstock.  Trim an A2 panel of black cardstock and adhere.  Adhere frame and stamped oval.
4. Die cut small label using the Kind of Corny dies and stamp with coordinating frame image and sentiment.  Layer over larger prepared label, then adhere both to the center of the floral stamped oval.

 

Best Dad Card

Aren't these just incredible? I can't get over how much these really look like aged iron! I'm thinking about all kind of dies in my stash that ought to look amazing with this technique. And they are so lightweight compared to typical metal embellishments. Can't wait to see what everyone creates using this fun process!

SAF 2017 Guest: Natasha Trupp

Get ready to be amazed with this project idea from Natasha Trupp!

"Impression plates add depth and interest to cards. In keeping with the 5th Anniversary gift theme of Wood, I am challenging you to use your wood themed impression plates. In order to add an additional “wow” factor, we’ll be inking up those impression plates. If you don’t have a wood-themed impression plate, you could also use a stencil or embossing folder.  You can try this technique with other impression plates, but be sure to still include a wood-type theme into your card somehow. A lot of the other Papertrey Ink impression plates would still look very wood like if used in brown tones (other suggestion: Diagonals, Rustic Burlap, Aida, Diagonal Stripes, Striped Sweater, Herringbone, Animal Prints (zebra stripes side), Argyle, Diamonds, Cane Print, Linen & Canvas, Moroccan Motifs, Tin Types, etc.) Get creative!"

1. Cut card base to size and score it.
2. Gently ink up an impression plate with your ink of choice (Dark Chocolate used in my project). Try to swipe the ink pad in the same direction as the pattern to avoid ink from going into the grooves. If any ink gets in the grooves, you can also wipe it with a cotton swab. Place Dark Chocolate cardstock on top of the inked impression plate. Place items into a folded piece of lightweight copy paper. Place rubber mat on top of this sandwich, ensuring that the entire impression plate is covered. Run through your die-cutting machine (I used the cuttlebug and used the sandwich A,B, impression plate/paper, rubber mat, B, cardboard shim)
3. Die cut 3 “thanks” out of Americana card stock and one of each of the leaf prints from Rustic Cream card stock
4. Adhere the 3 thanks together
5. Stamp the leaf prints images onto the corresponding leaf prints die cuts. I used Harvest Gold and Honey Oat for the elm leaf, Prairie Grass, Honey Oat, and Cocoa Bean for the oak leaf, and Americana and Terracotta Tile for the maple leaf. To achieve a blended look, start with the lightest ink color, then ink the desired portion with the darker color and then tap the lightest color back over the entire image. I used Dark Chocolate for the line detail image. 
6. Stamp the sentiment on Rustic Cream sentiment strip, using Dark Chocolate
7. Adhere woodgrain panel to the Kraft card base. Next adhere the sentiment strip to the woodgrain panel. Attach the “thanks” die cut. Adhere all of the leaves with foam tape.

• INK: Dark Chocolate, Honey Nut, Harvest Gold, Prairie Grass, Cocoa Bean, Americana, Terracotta Tile

I love the subtleness of this look and how it can really be applied to just about any kind of project. The inking definitely makes the impressions look more defined and crisp, which is something I think we are all trying to achieve, aren't we? "There were a couple of reasons I chose to take on the fifth anniversary tradition. For one thing, wood is such a versatile material. It exudes the warmth of nature and its texture absolutely cannot be beat. I grew up with a carpenter father and learned early on to appreciate the wide variety of styles you can achieve with wood. Not only that, I joined Papertrey Ink as a stamp designer on their fifth anniversary, so that occasion holds special meaning for me personally. Today I’m going to teach you a wood inlay technique that I hope you’ll enjoy as much as I do. This technique uses real wood paper or veneer, so you get all the benefits of the gorgeous woodgrain on your projects. If you don’t have those materials on hand, don’t worry! You can use two different shades of neutral cardstock stamped or stenciled with woodgrain for a similar effect. Thank you so much for joining me! Have fun!"

Sunflower Birthday Card

1. Use marker (chisel tip preferable) to “stain” woodgrain paper or thin veneer. Make sure to follow the grain to give a nice, smooth appearance.
2. Die cut your chosen shape from 2 (or more) colors of woodgrain paper.
3. Adhere adhesive/label paper to the back of your die cut, sticky side up.
4. Inlay the second color of woodgrain paper, attaching it to the sticky surface. Set aside while you stamp your card base.
5. Once card base is finished, adhere wood panel to card front with foam tape.

Not Alone Card

1. Use marker to “stain” woodgrain paper or thin veneer. Make sure to follow the grain to give a nice, smooth appearance.
2. Die cut your chosen shape from 2 (or more) colors of woodgrain paper.
3. Adhere adhesive/label paper to the back of your die cut, sticky side up.
4. Inlay the additional colors of woodgrain paper, attaching it to the sticky surface.
5. Adhere woodgrain panel to your card base.
6. Die cut leafy branches and sentiment banner.
7. Stamp sentiment and adhere over branches using foam tape.

 

Sunflower Birthday Card
