Throwback Thursday: Tipped Tops Dies

Make It Monday Break

We hope you've enjoyed the amazing Stamp-a-faire event that we shared with you over the weekend!  We hope we've left you feeling inspired and excited to create something beautiful with stamps and ink....or maybe even a few other supplies you might have seen us use over the weekend!  Our hope for you, is that this weekend sparked a creativity in you that won't soon be forgotten and that you'll put that creativity to good use, creating beautiful things that you can use to bless all those loved ones around you.  

Because of the amount of creative content that was shared over the weekend, we're giving the Design Team the day off from Make It Monday responsibilities, but we'll be back next week with a new video to share.  In the meantime, don't forget that ALL of the Stamp-a-faire challenges will be open for your participation until Thursday, August 31 at 7AM EST.  So if you're itching to play along with a challenge this morning, maybe there's one that you didn't get to over the weekend!  There's still time and we hope you'll play along and enter to win!

SAF 2017 Guest: Carissa Wiley

We are pleased to introduce an exclusive presentation from Carissa Wiley.

"Hi everyone!  Thanks for stopping by today.  I’m Carissa Wiley and I’m so excited to be here as a guest for Paper Trey Ink’s Stamp-A-Faire! Today I’m going to be sharing some ways to create a faux tin foil look on your card projects  In the video below, I’ll walk you through two card projects using these techniques."

To create my faux tin look, I’ll be using the Nuvo Gilding Flakes in Silver Bullion. Gilding flakes have been on the market for quite some time and seem to be making a come back this year.  I wanted to share a few ways to use these on your cards.  The gilding flakes leave you with a metallic shine that is slightly more antiqued than a traditional foil.

There are a few ways you can add these gilding flakes to your card projects.  Here are just a few.

1. Use a double-sided adhesive sheet to create gilded die cuts.  For this technique, I prefer to use the Be Creative double-sided sheets.  I add the adhesive to my cardstock and then run that through my die cut machine with the adhesive side facing toward the cutting blade.  I’m left with a die cut that has sticky adhesive all over the front.  I can then expose my adhesive and press the gilding flakes in to the adhesive.
2. Use a glue pen to add gilded embellishments to your stamped images.  Today’s second card features a few little accents on top of my stamped images.  I simply added some glue, using a glue pen in the areas where I wanted to add my tin accents.  It’s important that you use a glue that dries tacky for this technique.  I used the Zig Two Way Glue Pen.  You can draw lines, dots….whatever you want.  I allowed the glue to dry before adhering my gilding flakes.  Once the glue is dry, it will be tacky.  I pressed my gilding flakes to the areas with glue and voila, custom tin accents on a stamped image.
3. Use double-sided tape to create stripes on your project.  I used the Be Creative tape in 1/8 width to create a stripe running diagonally along the front of my card.  You can use varying widths to create more stripes.  Or add multiple colors of gilding flakes.  Once my adhesive was added to the front of my card, I removed the backer and pressed the flakes to the adhesive.  I love adding these metallic stripes to my card projects.
4. Use a sticky embossing powder to gild stamped images.  I didn’t show this technique in today’s video, but you can use a sticky or bonding embossing powder to adhere gilding flakes to your stamped images to create a metallic stamped image.  This gives you a different look than using metallic embossing powders.  Try it out!

For all of my projects, I used a box to contain my flakes.  These gilding flakes are very fine and very light and can definitely go flying on you!  Using a box helps to keep the flakes contained.

Once the gilding flakes are applied to your project, use a brush to brush away the excess flakes and remove any rough edges that the flakes may have left behind.

• OTHER: white embossing powder, white paint pen, clear sequins, silver thread, tape runner adhesive, glue pen, adhesive sheets, 1/8" scor-tape, foam adhesive, matte medium adhesive, die cut machine, metal shim, scissors, paper trimmer, tweezers, heat tool, anti static powder tool

• Now it's your turn!  Create a project featuring gilding flakes.  You can choose to re-create the exact project from Carissa above or design your own using the same concepts. Your project must also incorporate at least one Papertrey product.

SAF 2017 Guest: Laurie Schmidlin

Just wait until you see what Laurie Schmidlin has in store for you next!

"Hey everyone!  Are you enjoying all of the amazing challenges so far? Are you ready for another one?  My Anniversary material is Aluminum +Tin!  Adding metals to cards is so trendy right now and with the technique I will be sharing it couldn’t be easier!  I am showing how to create the Tarnished Foil technique.  This is a perfect technique for creating cards for the upcoming Fall season, but is versatile enough to use anytime!  With all of the supplies being readily available, it’s something that everyone can do!  I’m so very excited to be hosting this challenge and cannot wait to see what you all create!"

1. Trim A2 card base from Kraft cardstock.  Trim smaller kraft panel and sponge with Kraft ink using Dots stencil.
2. Trim kraft layer measuring 4” wide by 3” tall.  Sponge all kraft layers with gold ink.
3. Wipe black permanent ink onto tin sheet.  Emboss with Woodgrain Stencil.
4. Apply Versamark ink in small patches on tin sheet and add copper embossing powder.  Heat set.
5. Repeat above step using gold embossing powder.
6. Rub permanent black ink over gold and copper embossing to achieve tarnished look.  Trim to 4” wide by 2 ¾” tall.  Adhere to smaller kraft layer.
7. Die cut leaves and sentiment.
8. Add gold embossing powder to lower portion of sentiment die cut.
9. Adhere tin layer to kraft background using dimensional foam.  Adhere to card base.
10. Adhere leaves and sentiment to tin layer.  Glue on twine bow.

 

• INK: Kraft, Versamark, Jet Black Archival Ink (Ranger) or Jet Black StazOn in (Tsukineko), Delicata Gold
• PAPER: Kraft, True Black, Honey Nut, Simply Chartreuse, Scarlet Jewel
• DIES: Leaf Silhouettes, Counting My Blessings
• OTHER: Woodgrain Stencil, Stencil Basics: Dots, Copper Embossing Powder, Gold Embossing Powder, Tin Crafting Sheets (or Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil), Black twine
