Now that I've made all of the formal introductions, let's get onto the projects!
My first project is relatively simple in design, keeping it flat and easy to mail.
I stamped the base layer of this conch shell onto the white card front using Aqua Mist, then added the secondary shading layer with Soft Stone. The final detail layer uses Stormy Sea. To help ground the shell so it didn't appear to be floating, I stamped Sand Swatch in Soft Stone a few times and added shadow directly under the shell with a T1 Copic marker.
TIP: One of the tricks for working with these shell stamps is to make sure the color you use for the second layer (or shadow stamp) needs to be subtle and only a shade or two darker than your base layer. Soft Stone in particular layers nicely over many of the lighter ink colors for this step.
The "For You" sentiment from Calligraphy Classics was a nice fit underneath the shell. This was stamped in Stormy Sea as well, being sure to overlap the top of the flourishes over the shell for balance.
As a finishing touch, I wrapped crochet thread around the card front a few times and finished it with a bow.
The whale in Heather's new set is just the cutest thing ever, I could hardly wait to put him to work!
There are both outline and solid versions of the whale, and I selected the outline version to work with. To be a bit outside of the box I opted to not color him in, but instead add solid stamps and layer the with the star of the show. The whale is stamped in Blueberry Sky and his friends in Orange Zest and Summer Sunrise.
TIP: When building a design like this, stamp your outline image first and then fill in the pattern. It is easier to adjust the polka dots as you go around the whale's design features rather than the other way around.
The large slightly irregular polka dots I added to the bottom are actually the base layer of the sea urchin from Simple Seashells. These were stamped in Aqua Mist. Finally, the sentiment was added in True Black. I love this phrase and think it will be perfect to give a light-hearted twist to someone who has been having a rough go of it.
I've had a lot of fun experimenting with stencils lately and I was excited to do something a little different with this one from the new Sun & Surf collection.
I started by stamping this great sentiment from Floral Sketches in the lower corner using True Black.
TIP: If you are doing a technique that is somewhat time intensive to a single layer card, stamp your sentiment first. This way you eliminate the chances of messing up your hard work right at the end of the design process, and it help you to plan where the design/technique should go so it accents the sentiment nicely.
Next I laid the stencil down and used my handy Pigma Micron pen with the .01 tip and worked my way from one side to the other. I outlined each spot first and then filled it in with scribbles with the stencil still in place. If you leave the stencil there the whole time, there is no need to worry about going outside the lines and it is a very easy and fun process!
I chose to keep this project a simple black and white, but you could go in and add Copic coloring behind each of the scribbled areas for more definition and contrast, especially with bright colors.
My next three cards are a mini series that showcases my experimentation with Perfect Pearls and the new Simple Seashells sets. The results are just so gorgeous! But alas, very difficult to photograph! I wish there was some way I could show you these in person!
This first card uses the pretty scallop shells. The base layer is in Vintage Jadeite, shading layer in Aqua Mist and the final layer in Versamark, brushed with Blush Perfect Pearls.
The sentiments for this set of three cards are all from the fabulous (previously released) Scripted set. I stamped the main phrase in Aqua Mist and the companion sentiment in Charcoal Palette.
This next card was created much in the same way, only with the tulip shell and a different color scheme.
The base layer is stamped in Lovely Lady, shadow layer in Melon Berry, and the detail layer in VersaMark with the same Blush Perfect Pearls.
Loving the way that Lovely Lady looks on Melon Berry cardstock, you need to go try it right now!
For the last one in this series I used the sea urchin on Sweet Blush cardstock. The base layer is in Lovely Lady, the shadow layer in Lavender Moon and the detail layer in VersaMark with Blush Perfect Pearls.
