Edited to Add: Many of you had visited the above link after my initial posting, and in the meantime, the Paper Crafts blog had "rolled" over to a new month.  The link has been corrected to go directly to the post I meant to reference.  I want to extend Cath and all my Paper Crafts friends big hugs for such a heartfelt post and farewell wishes!  xxx

Creative FREEdom...

First, I want to thank EVERYONE for all your comments about my television appearance that I spoke about in yesterday's post.  It was very reassuring to read through all of them and made me feel at ease about the whole thing!  I was really hesitant to even post a link after a few of you had requested it!  So thanks for all your support.  It is one of my favorite things about this industry, a benefit that I wasn't expecting.  Hugs to each and every one of you!

Speaking of "the industry", I had an issue come to light today that I would like to take a moment to talk about.  I don't normally do this sort of thing on my blog, but I really feel the need to share my feelings on the subject.

And that subject would be creative copyrights.

A particular web-store took it upon themselves to blatantly steal a photograph of one of my nugget tin projects from this blog and use it to sell the tins themselves.  Not only did this anger me, but it also hurt me beyond words.  Anyone that has a creative bone in their body knows the feeling of accomplishment and ownership when they complete a project, or even a concept that they are proud of.

To have this project taken without permission and used for someone else's financial gain is one of the most intentionally hurtful acts that anyone has ever committed towards me.

I think one of the reasons that it upsets me so much is that I work so hard to make this place an open, inspiring creative space.  Where people can come to learn new things, explore techniques & concepts.  The time I commit to providing this type of environment is enormous, yet very important to me.  There is no charge to enter here and gain new ideas.  You do not need to pay to have a library of tutorials available whenever you need a creative jump start.

Everything is provided purely for the LOVE & PASSION I have for this craft.

The ink, the stamps, the paper. I want everyone to feel like THEY can do this.  Even if they haven't stamped before, I want this to be a place where they feel everything is doable.

I want everyone in the WORLD to know and feel the joy that comes from creating something with their own two hands.

The feeling of delight you get when you lift that block from the paper and see a beautifully stamped image left behind.  These are all the reasons why I share everything I do.

The things I have talked about here today, not only apply to my personal space that I have created here for you to visit, but also to the many creative outlets that are available all over the internet today.  Use them wisely.  Be respectful.  And make wise choices.

Don't use somebody else's work for your own personal financial gain.

Instead, use the artwork as an inspiration; a tool to help you build upon your own creativity.  That's what ALL of us share our artwork with others for, so use the resource as it was originally intended. Thanks for considering my opinion today.  I appreciate all of your support so much.  It is because of you that I continue finding inspiration for new stamp designs and project concepts.  Thanks for being a part of this little hobby we call stamping!

Talk of the Town

Many of you may remember that back on October 11th, during this month's countdown I mentioned having the opportunity to participate in my first ever television appearance.

I owe my good fortune to the owner of our local scrapbook store, Georgie Stimson.  She graciously "mentioned" me after one of her recent appearances on the same program and piqued the host's interest in Papertrey's nugget stamps.

I'll be honest.  I was pretty nervous.  I mean, really, who wouldn't be?!?!  I prepared extensively for the appearance, including creating many samples of what could be done with the nuggets.  I also packed my supplies 2 or 3 times, just to be sure that I didn't forget anything!

Georgie made the short road trip to Nashville with me, and I am SO glad she did.  When going to a strange place for the first time, especially when that place is a News Station, you can't help but feel intimidated!  But with Georgie by my side, who knows all the ins and outs of the facility, she made me feel much more comfortable!

When we were first led into the room where we were going to be shooting, I was surprised at the size!  It was a lot smaller then I expected.  There was a cluster of cameras in the middle of the room, and the perimeter was dotted with the different platforms & tables used for the various segments that they filmed there.  It was really very interesting to see all that in person!

102207_talk_of_the_townWe then got everything ready on the table I was designated, while getting briefed a little at the same time.  It would be a 4 minute segment, DON"T look directly at the camera, feel free to embellish but stay on track.  Meryl Rose, the host, helped lead me to figure out the best way to do our little segment.  We ended up using Georgie's suggestion of having Meryl do the actual stamping of the label when the time came.

So, it finally came time to film, the camera was rolling and Meryl did my little introduction.  Everything went pretty well until the last two minutes of my 4 minute segment!

#1: I get the sniffles when I'm nervous.

Why should a LIVE television appearance be any different?!?!  So there I am trying to answer the questions that Meryl asks of me, while trying to *sniff* *sniff* unnoticeably!

#2: THE KNOT.

So, #2, I didn't really notice until I got home and actually watched myself on tv.  (By the way, note to self, DO NOT watch yourself on tv.  Your left with a MUCH better opinion of your appearance if it solely based on your actual experience, rather then visually reliving it! LOL!)  Here I am, just having finished showing Meryl how to put the nuggets in the tin when I decide that it is a good idea to tie a piece of ribbon with a simple knot around the tin.  Seems like an easy enough task, right?  Well, apparently not in my case!  For the FULL final 2 minutes of my appearance I am looking DOWN fiddling with this totally irrelevant knot!  Meryl is asking me questions about Papertrey's product line, I'm looking down, concentrating on my little ol' knot.  Meryl asks me about the other themes or holidays we offer the nugget stamps in, I'm still working on the knot.  At this point, it didn't even MATTER whether or not the knot was tied.  I STILL looked down, fiddling with that KNOT!  Oh, I could have kicked myself when I got home!

Overall, it was a really positive experience, I had fun, Learned a lot and I would definitely do it again if I were asked.  Although, I would probably bring a project to present that didn't require any KNOTS!!!

Edited to Add: If you would like to see the segment I did for Talk of the Town, you can go to their website HERE.  Towards the right of the page is a Video on Demand box.  Scroll down through about 25 or so items and you will come to "Making Halloween Candy Wrappers with Papertrey Ink".  (It is directly below recipe #4059 for Hashbrown Casserole, which is divine might I add!)

Rockin' Girl Entrepreneur

Several of you have nominated me as a Rockin' Girl Blogger.  Wow, what an honor!  The title has been given to many of the girl bloggers in the stamping community, so rather than tag them again I thought I would change the title to Rockin' Girl Entrepreneur.

RockingirliconWhy you may ask?  At CHA I had a fairly prolific moment while sitting at dinner with fellow stampers.  The stamping industry has seen major changes in just the last 12 months, mostly due to women in the industry.  While as amazing as their product is, Stampin' Up! and other large companies have dominated the stamping world for years.  But due to the inginuity, dedication and good ol' fashioned passion, a small handful of ladies have shaken things up and added some variety to our stamping diets.  How amazing is it that an avarage stay-at-home mom can make a difference in the industry that had previously been controlled by large multi-million dollar companies?  To that fact, I say ROCK ON!

Ellen Hutson & Karen Lockhart:  Ellen is a dear, dear friend of mine and the few times I've met Karen have been so heart-warming.  These partners embrace the power of women in the industry and are so inspirational to me.  No matter the successes they have seen they continue to be down to earth and always focus on the education of a stamper.

GinaK: Not only is she contributing to the industry with her hand-drawn images, she also donates her efforts and time to helping others with her charity work.  She is dedicated to customer service and being "real".  Her personality is so welcoming and you would be hard-pressed to enter any of the message boards at Splitcoast and not see her friendly banter.

Emily & Stamping Bella: I can sum Em up in one word, "MWAH"!  She has brought a fresh, funky girl power line to the market and invented a whole new language at the same time.  Who knew "bella" could be combined with any of the millions of words in the english laguage and sound so darn cool?!?!?

Kim & My Favorite Things: I haven't had the pleasure to meet her in person, but I have heard about her success and appreciate her passion for her product.  The images carried by her company are so unique and have a trademark look that you can recognize a mile away.  I always look forward to seeing her new releases.

I wish all of these women continued success in their stamping ventures.  Their designs and decication to providing the best is just amazing.  And to think at the same time they get dinner on the table, keep up with housework and do the grocery shopping just like the rest of us!  It is amazing what a WOMAN can do when she puts her mind to it!  Rock on!

While in Buffalo...

eat Buffalo Wings!  On Thursday night last week (my first night in Buffalo) the gang and I headed to Anchor Bar & Grill for THE original Buffalo Wings!  Now I know how they got their name!  Here are a few photos (sorry the quality isn't that great; the dim lighting in the restaurant contributed to that!)

060507_buffalo_wings_2 Here I am when our table's platter of 50 arrived.   I had to have my picture taken with the infamous wings!

preparing for CHA

I am in the midst of preparing for my big trip out to California for CHA Winter.  I'm looking forward to spending quality time with my fellow PC Pros, reuniting with other friends in the industry and of course getting to see all the new product!  I was just reviewing the list of vendors (there are approx. 900) attempting to map out a route for myself each day I am there.  There are a few booths that are at the top of my list that I CANNOT miss:

Luxe Designs  They are revealing little sneak peeks at each of their new lines, one each day until CHA begins.  I love the looks of Classic Black & Sarong.
Mcgill_punch McGill
I love all of their new punches and have to get my hands on some!  These are so versatile, I know I would utilize them all the time.  After all, a girl can never have too many punches!

Queen_and_co_peek Queen & Co
They have the coolest new felt embellishment strips I have ever seen.  I can hardly wait to see exactly what they are like in person!  These would have so many uses!  Be sure and check out their blog.  You can register to be one of the first to  get your hands on some of this!  Eight winners in all!

Crate Paper  There is a little bitty sneak peak on the front page of their website.  I love the colors and I am dying to see the whole collection!

FontWerks Kah-mei provided a little sneak peek on her blog.  Can't wait to see what they have in store.  They have the most trendy product, always pushing the envelope

Imagination Project has published a few projects featuring their yet-to-be-released new collections.  They have such fun stuff.  I've really enjoyed using their Gin-X  Coasters in the past.  Can't wait to see what they have up their sleeves in that department!

K I Memories has released stamps!  According to their website they were released last month, but their ad in the new CK Top 10 issue is the first I had heard.  They are so darn cute too!

Basic_grey Basic Grey has a new line called "perhaps" that looks REALLY fun.  Their look is so unique. Can't wait to see what that's all about.

Did I also mention that I get the opportunity to see Martha Stewart?  She is the keynote speaker and is hosting a Cocktail Reception and Speech on Sunday night Cath Edvalson & I will be attending together and I am so stinkin' excited!  I am a huge fan of both her entrepreneurial spirit and eye for design & style.

I fly out Sunday and won't return until Wednesday, the 31st.  I'll be sure to fill you in on all my favorite product picks when I get back!

Salt Lake City

Ed_board_1Ethan and I left for another adventure on Wednesday last week.  Our destination?  Salt Lake City and Paper Crafts headquarters.  We made it safe and sound.  Although traveling by myself with an infant will always be challenging.  Thursday we spent most of the day at the office. Contract negotiations and CKC brainstorming.  We also did a photo shoot for new headshots and a group shot.  The later part of the afternoon was free, so fellow PC Pro, Alisa, took me to a local scrapbooking store and a few other local attractions.  The entire staff than had a wonderful dinner at Cath Edvalson’s home.  Gorgeous house in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright.  She made two different homemade soups that were to die for.  Others contributed warm bread, salad, pumpkin & apple pies.  It was all yummy!  Friday was spent at the Hampton Inn conference room for an Editorial Board meeting.  The entire editorial staff was present along with Kim Kesti, Teri Anderson, Valerie Pingree & Alice Golden.  And of course, myself and the other pros (Alisa & Sue.)  Wendy couldn’t make it out this time, and we missed her so much!  We discussed future issues and did some extensive brainstorming.  Great bunch of gals.  Ethan was pretty well behaved for the whole meeting!  So thankfull for that!  We went out all together for dinner at a local restaraunt.  Good food and fantastic conversation. We headed home Saturday morning.  It is always so nice to get home from a long trip!  I missed Owen & Hannah, my cuddly hubby, my shower, my bed and all of Ethan’s baby gear!

Above is a pic from the editorial board meeting.  (sorry for the poor quality!)

all in a day's work...

102006_projects I completed all of these projects a few days ago for Paper Crafts.  All in one day.  So happy to get them done and remove them from my to do list.  As you know, I can't share to-be-published artwork with you, but I thought I could at least show you my stack.  I am putting the finishing touches on all of my write-ups to go along with them so I can ship the projects out.  Then I get to PLAY and design some stationery tonight.

I go through phases of what my favorite aspect of this hobby is.  Sometimes it is scrapbooking; telling my stories, capturing moments on paper.  Sometimes its the techniques, maybe with focus on stamping.  Sometimes it is graphic design using the computer only.  And sometimes (although rare) I don't want to touch paper at all and dabble in one of my other hobbies like sewing or knitting.  Right now my phase is designing stationery for my line.  I LOVE IT!  I could stay up all night, just me, the computer and my mouse in hand.  I love creating my own shapes and patterns.  All me and my creativity.  I can do whatever I want in any color I want.  Complete creative freedom.  Can't wait to share some of the work with you.  I am so passionate about it.  Dare I say, moreso than chocolate!

I taught a class last night at my local scrapbook store, and one of the students asked me how I have done so much with my career at such a young age.  Well, I don't think I'm all that young (27).  But I do know that I do what I love.  And I have a quote that hangs in back of my brain.

"No dream is too big."

I am a firm believer in this.  Anyone can acheive anything, as long as their heart is in it and they are willing to put in the time and effort to make it happen.  If you want it, you can have it.  It may not be handed to you on a silver platter, but you will get it with dedication and focus.  So what is your dream?  What are you doing TODAY to make it happen?  If your answer is nothing, than WHY NOT?  Life is too short to not chase dreams.  Dreams are made to come true.  My big dream has come true with this stationery line.  So now I need to dream even bigger.  What's next?  Stay tuned!

New favorite tool

092506_pantoneI know.  I am probaby the worst blogger that exists within the Typepad community.  I promise it is for a good cause.  I've been a busy little bee.  I am proud to say I have self-taught myself Adobe Illustrator, which in turn enables me to design my very own STATIONERY line!  So excited.  I am finishing up the Christmas line which will debut this November.  I have never been so excited for anything in my life (well okay, maybe it was little more exciting when I gave birth to my children)!  There are three different cards using a super-unique Christmas color scheme, complete with lined envelopes.  Everything is being printed on high-quality linen stock, which I personally LOVE to write on.  There will be wrapping paper and coordinating ribbon.  I've dsigned things that I love, and hopefully the public will feel the same way!  It is so hard not to share the designs with everybody!  You know the feeling.  When you create something you are so proud of, you want to show the world!  I just have to sit tight for another two months and the big day will be here!

I thought I would share with you my new FAVORITE tool.  Not only is it a great reference for graphic design, it is wonderful to utilize in trying out color schemes before you drag your cardstock stash out.  This may be old news to some of you, but I just discovered it.  A Pantone Formula Guide.   It is like the paint swatch book interior designers use, only this one is created with graphic designers in mind.  It has swatches for 1,114 colors, each complete with a "recipe" so you can re-create the color easily on your computer.  I have been using it like crazy to develop the color schemes for my new line.  I highly recommend it!  It takes a lot of guess work out of designing!

Birth Day Reflections...

082006_august_1979_2 27 years ago today I was born.  I always enjoy taking time to reflect when my Birth Day rolls around each year. Thinking about all I’ve done, where I’ve been, how much I’ve changed.  Because of some recent exciting news (details in the last paragraph of this post), I have mostly been reminiscing about my career. How it started.  Where it all began.  Looking back, I never in a million years would have imagined that I’d be where I am today, doing what I do.

....

Shortly after I got married in 1999, I had a few people asking me to make handmade birthday invitations for their children’s parties.  We were living in Connecticut outside of Waterbury.  I decided to start my own business.  I lovingly named it “Just-A-Note”.  I “published” my own catalog, printed from my home computer.  I had quite a few loyal customers, but the work got very repetitious.  And it was more difficult to create back then.  There weren’t many tools or supplies available at that time on the market.  So almost everything had to be made from scratch.

...

In January 2001, Owen was born. When he was about 5 months old a friend called to invite me to attend a scrapbook crop with her.  I decided to go.  While there, Jennifer (the scrapbook instructor), showed me a copy of Creating Keepsakes magazine.  As we were flipping through its pages, she said to me, ”Anybody can submit, you should give it a try!”  As my fingers ran across the glossy pages, full of creativity, I began noting all of the names in bold black text under each project.  I decided then and there, that one day I would see my name in print.

...

082006_paper_doll_page_2Life kept rolling along.  In August of 2001, we moved south, to Kentucky.  I began submitting scrapbook pages here and there to different publications.  Then one day while flipping through Memory Makers magazine I found an advertisement for a contest.  They wanted projects using creative, unique paper dolls.  I worked hard, perfecting each detail, until my entry was just right.  I submitted the page with a huge amount of anticipation weighing on my heart.  To my delight I was notified shortly there after that I had won an honorable mention and would be published in their special issue (Creative Paper Dolls, Spring 2002).  Hannah was born shortly after it was available in print.

...

082006_fmi_1Then I found a page in Creating Keepsakes, announcing a contest sponsored by Frances Meyer, Inc. (a.k.a. FMI).  First place winner would receive $2,000 in cash. I just knew I had to at least try.  With this contest, you had to send in your original work.  It was all I could do to wait to hear of the results.  The date came and went when they were supposed to announce the winners, and I knew for sure I had not won.  Then four days after the announcement date, I got a phone call.  It was the VP of FMI.  I had won first place!  They had so many entries to go through, that it had taken them longer than expected to chose a winner.  They fed-exed a check for two-grand, payable to “Nichole Heady” and it arrived 2 days later.  My winning page was published inside the front cover of the May 2003 issue of Creating Keepsakes.  It’s funny how David took notice of my future career path when the check arrived (LOL!).  Up until that point we had only had one vehicle, so we combined the winnings with our tax return to get our second car.  What a luxury that was!  David insisted that I set some money aside for myself, to do with what I like.  It was at this point that a good friend introduced me to Stampin’ Up!

...

I had only been to one workshop, and fell in love.  I had admired rubber stamps before, but never thought much of them.  How boring! Black ink, white paper!  Or so I thought!  One look at the SU! catalog and all the possibilities, I decided I needed it all!  My friend talked me into the idea of becoming a demonstrator.  So I signed up, purchasing the starter kit with my winnings I had set aside.  I jumped in head first, holding classes, running hostess workshops, fostering a downline.

...

082006_card_creations_1 In early 2003, I was browsing the internet and found a call for handmade cards to be used in a brand new publication called “Card Creations”.  I remember getting an amazing feeling deep down, that “I had to do this”.  So I slaved away for two weeks, coming up with several projects that could be considered “my best”.  I submitted them shortly after, and checked my email at least 20 times a day, waiting for some kind of message from them regarding my cards.  Then it finally happened.  I had three cards accepted!  I was so excited, I could hardly contain myself.  Shortly after that, Crafts magazine made its transition into Paper Crafts magazine, with their editor as their guide, Valerie Pingree.  I began making it a priority to submit projects to them often, with a few here and there actually getting accepted.  In January of 2004, we moved to our current home in Tennessee.  I hadn’t even finished unpacking everything into my new craft space when Valerie called me one day, completely out of the blue.  She needed a class designed for the CKC curriculum that year and she was on a very tight deadline.  Class title: Embossing and Beyond.  I needed to develop the class outline, two make n’ take projects, and 40 unique projects illustrating all techniques involved with embossing, including a handout that described in detail how to do each of these techniques. All in 8 days.  Did I wish to accept the mission? WOW!  I told her I would think about it and get back to her the next morning.  Hannah was 18 months.  Owen had just turned three.  Could I do this?  After the kids had been put to bed that night, I printed out all the information Valerie had emailed regarding what my tasks would be.  I prepared a hot bubble bath, and brought the paperwork to look over.  I read it over and over again.  I knew anyone with common sense would say no, but something kept pulling at me.  Something was telling me this would be one of the most important things I would do.  I thought about it a long time in the tub.  I finally decided to say yes.  So I worked around the clock for eight days straight.  My craft table had never been such a mess.  David & the kids were so neglected, but I knew deep down, that it was the right thing to do.  I completed the task on time, and Valerie loved the concepts I had come up with for the class.

...

082006_first_pc101_1 Not long after, in February 2004, she emailed regarding the extension of a concept covered in the CKC class.  She wanted me to take over their Paper Crafts 101 column, with the first subject to be adhesive embossing.  I couldn’t believe it.  I was being offered a “job” with the magazine.  It was a dream come true.  Actually, it was more than I had ever dreamed of.  So I continued creating the artwork behind PC101 every issue, and I still do to this day.  It’s almost been three years.  This past January I joined their Paper Crafts Pro Team, just to add to my blessings.

...

So this brings me to today!  Recently a wonderful woman named Julie, spoke to me about designing my own line of stationery and other paper products, wrapping paper, journals, etc.  I’ve decided to do it, and I am so excited.  We’re aiming for a Christmas 2006 release, so I’ve been conceptualizing already.  It amazes me that a mere six years ago I was sitting behind my home computer, printing very novice stationery and marketing it to a few friends and family.  And here I am today, getting the opportunity to send my designs off to a professional printing company for mass production.

Happy Birth Day to me!  Who knows what I’ll be celebrating next year!
