Caterpillar Card Fun

Inching_by_to_say_hi I hadn't seen many people use the caterpillar bits & pieces that Candice included in her new Pond Life set, so I thought I would put together a little card using them.  The set includes the head, body segment & backside all as separate images.  I loved this detail because it allows you, the artist, to do two things; control the length of the caterpillar & alternate the colors used for each body part.  For my project today, I wanted to make a bright, cheerful, sunny card, so I pulled out my new favorites, Lemon Tart & Summer Sunrise.  I created a few different patterned papers using a variety of stamp sets (see the supply list below) to create a strip medley on the cover.

Inching_by_to_say_hi_closeup After I had completed stamping my caterpillar, I added this fun sentiment from Pond Life Sentiments.  I think it is just SO adorable!  I also added Stickles to the little guy.  He just needed a little accessorizing!  Did you purchase Pond Life with our most release?  I would love to see your projects using the little caterpillar.  He has so many possibilities!  I know the Simple Alphabet would fit in each segment of the body, which would be so cute spell out a child's name!

Dreams Take Flight

Dreams_take_flight_cardI was playing around with Pond Life the other night and ended up designing some really fun patterned paper by pairing the dragonfly image with Polka Dot Basics.  I know, I have been using Polka Dot Basics a lot lately, but it is *so* easy to use and adds so much to a project.  I have made a mental note to design more background sets like this.  Just so versatile!

Dreams_take_flight For my paper, I stamped the polka dots first with Groovy Guava ink onto Groovy Guava cardstock.  I then stamped the dragonflies with white ink on top of the polka dots.  I love how the white is just slightly transparent and you can see the polka dots through them.  The paper looked just a little bare, so I went back in and stamped the small hollow dot image intermittently over single polka dots.  The last touch was to add a little Star Dust stickles to the "encircled" dots.  I challenge you to make some of your own patterned paper today by layering images over a background pattern.  Link your creation in the comments section so I can take a peek!  Have a creative day!!!!

1- Pond Life

Candice's set, Pond Life, has so many adorable images in it.  I am anxious to get the opportunity to play with all of them!  Today I thought I would move onto the turtle!!!  I turned him into a fun dimensional focal point, and I thought you might like to know all the details!

Turtle_shell_cut_out The shell comes in two parts, one solid image (stamped in Chartreuse Palette) and one "shell" image (stamped in Landscape Palette) that features all of the separate plates and details of a shell.  I cut out the shell right along the edge of the image.

.........................................................................................................
Turtle_cut_out Followed by a nice sponging with Landscape Palette ink.  I thought this added a lot of dimension to the shell.  The turtles head, feet & tail are all separate images.  This allows you to easily interchange colors or body parts.  ( I think it would be SO cute to NOT stamp a head, like he had it pulled into his shell!  I just haven't come up with a sentiment that makes sense yet!)  Here I have stamped his body and cut it out as well.

...........................................................................................................
Turtle_closeup A few foam dimensionals and one of the sentiments from the mini Pond Life Sentiments set brought the focal point of this card together.  I used Crystal Effects on the individual plates of the turtle's shell as an added accent.

......................................................................................................

Slow_down_turtle_card Here is my finished project.  I love this little guy!  He would be appropriate on birthday cards for boys and even baby cards.  What else can you think of to do with this little turtle?

While brainstorming for this month's countdown, an old technique cam to mind that I hadn't done for ages!  I think they used to be referred to as gel cards!  I have prepared a step-by-step tutorial that helps to reinvent this technique and make it new again!

First, you will need to prepare your card base according to the template I have prepared.
Download gel_card_template.pdf

Cardstock_template I used Aqua Mist cardstock.  After cutting & scoring in the appropriate places, I stamped one side with a series of open dots contained in our Polka Dot Basics set.

.........................................................................................................................
Punched_window Next, I folded the bottom flap upwards and punched through both layers with a 1.75-inch circle punch.

..........................................................................................................................
Punched_opened After unfolding it, your project will look like this.

.........................................................................................................................
Tacky_tape Now you will want to flip your project over to the backside.  Place small pieces of tacky tape around the opening in the middle section of your project.  You also want to add a couple pieces to the side flaps.

...........................................................................................................................
Gel_bag Put a small amount of clear hair gel (about 1 tablespoon) into a small ziploc bag.  I purchased these in the beading section of my local craft store.

...........................................................................................................................
Gel_bag_attached Trim the top of the bag slightly, about 1/8-inch above the zipped closure.  Adhere to your project with the tacky tape you already put in place.

..........................................................................................................................
Folded_flap Fold the bottom tab up.  The two circles will match up perfectly since you punched them together.  You will be sandwiching the gel bag at this point as well.

...........................................................................................................................
Folded_pocket Fold the pocket up and fold the tabs around to the back.

...........................................................................................................................
Finished_pocket Here's the finished pocket with it's fun gel window!

..........................................................................................................................
Birthday_fishes_tag To finish my project, I created this tag using fish images from Pond Life.  The tag measures 3.5 x 4.75.  I folded a scalloped circle of Lemon Tart cardstock at the top of the tag as a little accent as well.

...........................................................................................................................
Birthday_fishes_gel_card When the tag is inserted in the pocket, it looks like the fish are really under water!   Not only does this gel accent look cool, but it is super fun to play with too, especially for little boys!

.........................................................................................................................
Birthday_fishes_closeup I'll leave you wit a close-up for the gel window.  Also notice the sentiment "birthday fishes".  thsi sentiment along with a few others that coordinate with Pond Life will be available in a $5 mini set.  They really help to broaden your options with the main set!
