Do you remember back in February when we announced the winner of our second Papertrey Apprentice contest? Kylie Swain was announced the winner and I was so excited to have the opportunity to work with her point of view since she lives in the Australia. She is a VERY talented stamper (you can see Kylie's Blog here) and I was anxious to see what she had in mind! In her email she told me a lot about the bond that she has with her father and I found it very inspiring.

Kylie was kind enough to make a special project to share with all of you using the images she inspired. She also had a few things to share about her experience:
What was it like working on a stamp set?
It was so exciting. I've never been involved in anything like this before and I didn't know what to expect. I am really impressed with the process of putting together a stamp set. I would love to do more one day.
How were you involved in the process?
I gave my suggestions to Nichole (all 7 of them!!! LOL) and some images in mind. I sent Nichole an image of a tree from a "male card" class I attended a while ago and she took it from there. It is so amazing to see your thoughts on paper!
Why did you decide on the theme that you did?
I really wanted a masculine set as there aren't a lot out there. I don't know about anyone else, but I find making males card difficult. I have a close relationship with my dad and I just love the sentiments that Nichole came up with. I'm pretty sure there are a few he would agree with! LOL
Which of the quotes best reflects the relationship you have
with your father?
I think it would be - "You gave me the greatest gift that anyone could give another person; you believed in me". I also really love and find funny "A true father carries pictures in his wallet where his money used to be". Not that I kept my dad broke, but I know he would like that one too!
NOW ONTO NICHOLE'S PROJECT:
One of the things I love about the theme that Kylie suggested is gaining the ability to easily put into words exactly how we feel about our fathers. I know every year I search high and low throughout the internet & idea books, trying to find the perfect sentiment for my dad on both his birthday and father's day. This set has a total of NINE fatherly quotes that will pull at your heartstrings. I can hardly wait for the set to be revealed so that you can see the collection of verses for yourself! As Kylie mentioned before, one of her favorite quotes from her set is the one at the right. That quote is the inspiration for today's project!
What better to hold a quote like that than an actual wallet card? I started with a piece of cardstock cut to 7 inches high & 8.5 inches wide, scored in half on the 7 inch side @ 3.5 inches.

I then adhered rectangles of patterned paper (from the Father Knows Best 12x12 Patterned Paper Collection) to each half. It is important to do two pieces, rather than one large piece that overlaps the fold.

I scored the cardstock in half in the opposite direction. Next, I stitched along the top & bottom edges of the cardstock strip. The reason why I am doing this step is because I wanted there to be decorative stitching around the top edge of the wallet, but it of course could not be sewn shut.

Next I adhered created a pocket for the wallet. I started with a 3.75 x 2.75 inch rectangle of the same brown cardstock. I notched the top of it with a circle punch. I then stitched it place.

To fasten the ends down of my first round of stitching I used crystal clear scotch tape.

I was then ready to finish assembly of the wallet by folding it back in half and stitching up either end. After trimming the threads on those ends, I fastened them with tiny drops of clear glue and allowed them to dry for a few minutes while I moved onto the next step.

The pocket needed something to hold, so I traced a credit card onto white cardstock and cut it out. I then covered it with a few more papers from the same 12x12 collection. I stamped the sentiment with Burnt Umber Palette ink and punched it out with a 1.5-inch circle punch.

The card looks right at home once it is inserted into the pocket!

Here's a shot of the final project. I really like the patterned lining of the wallet. I think it is such a nice detail!
So what could you put IN the wallet? Here's a short list to start you off:
- a mini album with pictures of his children/grandchildren
- coupons for personal services from you, like having the lawn mowed or a rain check for a special outing.
- gift card to his favorite restaurant or store
- a special handwritten note from a child
- an appointment card for a nice massage at the local spa

Here is the "simple" version of my tree. I fell in love with this color scheme (Papertrey's Aqua Mist & Landscape Palette ink). I cut up the sentiment using my ransom technique. I helped fill the left side of the project nicely.
Here is the "embellished" version of the tree. There are two small separate stamps included in this set that imitate the circles from the tree. They coordinate with 1/2-inch and 1/4-inch circle punches. By adding these individual circles to the tree with foam dimensionals, you add a lot of detail & visual interest.

I really wanted to use a polka dot brad on this project, but didn't have one the right color. I ended up using my handy dandy White Poster Paint Pen from Sharpie to add my own dots to this plain brad.
